"Bizarre Hospital Encounter: Woman Surprised to Learn She's Been Declared 'Dead' on Record"

A startling incident left Susan Johnson, a 62-year-old retired housekeeper from Scarborough, shaken to her core. Upon arriving at Bridlington Hospital in Yorkshire for a routine scan, hospital staff informed her that according to their records, she had been deceased for the past four months.

Susan recounted her disbelief as she handed over her paperwork, only to be met with the shocking words, "Oh, you're deceased." The revelation left her in a state of utter bewilderment, prompting her husband, Bob, to rush to her aid with a comforting cup of coffee.

Despite assurances from her GP that the error had been rectified, Susan encountered further complications when contacting the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), where she was informed that according to their system, she was still marked as deceased. In a surreal moment, a call handler informed her, "On the computer, you're deceased," to which Susan incredulously replied, "But I'm speaking to you right now."

The mistake had unintended consequences, temporarily halting Susan's carer's allowance for looking after her disabled husband, Bob. Struggling to find anyone to address the error, Susan felt a sense of isolation and helplessness.

The source of the error was traced back to an electronic instruction from Primary Care Support England (PCSE) received by Scarborough Medical Group. Despite efforts to rectify the situation promptly, the ordeal had a profound impact on Susan, who found solace in her hobbies of gardening and knitting as she attempted to recover from the shock.

Addressing the incident, an NHS spokesperson acknowledged the issue, emphasizing that the civil death registration had been promptly removed from Susan's medical record within 24 hours of being reported in March 2023. They urged Susan to reach out directly to address any lingering concerns or confusion.
